The Creative Calling

“To be nobody-but-yourself—in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else—means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.”- E.E. Cummings.

Creative people usually don’t fit in. Entrepreneurs, pioneers, free thinkers and other leaders nearly always see themselves differently to how most others see them. In fact, they see the world differently.

We often hate labels, such as titles or job descriptions. We also dislike reductivist theories. The human mind, the human spirit is infinitely more complex that one dimensional labels or theories.

Because we see things differently, because we do not fit, we create. We create first an inner world that makes sense and feels right. We then design a business, a family, a vision, a life that is authentic with the inner self.

Human history has been shaped by creative minds, and people who have had the courage, belief and will to design a different life.

People who see beyond, people who see what most do not, are perhaps our most valuable asset, especially in the digital age. It has been said recently, 40% of all traditional jobs will be made redundant in the next ten years. This is largely due to the innovations brought about by technology- creative minds utilising technology as an instrument for change.

I believe we are all inherently, naturally creative. To adapt to change we must be able to create. Evolution, nature, the very movements of the universe evidence this principle.

The message of Cummings is an important and timely reminder that we need to build a fostering ecosystem for all of us to create. It might be a new tech idea, a startup, a new investment strategy. To see, to do, to then serve in ways yet imagined, allows us to build a bedrock to solve perhaps any problem.

It is a bedrock for us to not only find our purpose, but to rise and help the lives of others. Society perhaps now realises that creativity, not conformity is its inherent strength. Creativity then is our true calling.
